The literature suggests that mobile applications as tools for facilitating communication in PwD are promising. Applying certain inclusion and exclusion criteria, yielded a set of articles (n = 11). Searches of PubMed, IEEE XPLORE, and ACM Digital Library databases were conducted to establish a comprehensive understanding of the current literature on dementia care as related to 1) mobile applications, 2) communication technology, and 3) communications-based mobile applications. A PICO framework was applied with a Population consisting of PwD, Interventions consisting of communication technology, focusing primarily on mobile applications, Comparisons between patient well-being with and without technological intervention, and Outcomes that vary but can include usability of technology, quality of communication, and user acceptance. This review aims to compile the existing literature on communications-based mobile applications regarding dementia and assess their opportunities and limitations. The literature regarding mobile health (mHealth) applications, especially communications-based mHealth applications, is limited. To better understand these factors, future work should adopt a holistic approach to studying new methods of creating meaningful activities in dementia care.Ĭommunication difficulties are one of the primary symptoms associated with dementia, and mobile applications have shown promise as tools for facilitating communication in patients with dementia (PwD). These findings are illustrated through a transactional model.Ĭonclusion: This study highlights the complex multitude of factors affecting person-environment interactions in which narrative identity and relationships are constructed. Findings suggest that SENSE-GARDEN can stimulate emotional experiences, preserve narrative identity, and foster interpersonal relationships. Results: Three themes were generated: openness, learning, and connection. The interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. After using SENSE-GARDEN for 12–16 weeks, 20 participants (7 persons with dementia and 13 caregivers) were interviewed. Method: We conducted a qualitative interview study to explore the experiences of people with moderate to advanced dementia and their caregivers in Norway and Portugal. Purpose: Informed by symbolic interactionism and Deweyan transactionalism, the aim of this study was to develop a transactional model of how narrative identity and relationships are promoted through the use of a new technological solution, SENSE-GARDEN, that uses digital technologies and multisensory stimuli to facilitate individualized, meaningful activities. Meaningful activities in dementia care can promote the co-construction of narrative identity in caregiving relationships, helping to preserve the sense of self in people with dementia. Netherlands Trial Register: NL9219 registered (21 January 2021) NTR (). The digital Photo-Activity is expected to promote meaningful connections between the resident with dementia, and their (in)formal carers through the facilitation of person-centered conversations. Results of the trial will be available for dissemination by Spring 2023. Finally, an implementation package based on the process evaluation will be developed, allowing the scaling up of the intervention to other care institutions. In addition, a process evaluation will be carried out by means of semi-structured interviews with the participating residents and (in)formal carers. ![]() Qualitative and quantitative methods will be used to investigate the effects of the intervention on mood, social interaction and quality of life of the PWD, sense of competence of informal carers, empathy and personal attitude of the formal carers, and quality of the relationship between the PWD, and their (in)formal carers. Measurements will be conducted by independent assessors at baseline (T0), after one month (T1) and at follow up, two weeks after T1 (T2). Residents will be offered the Photo-Activity or the control activity by (in)formal carers during one month. ![]() Next, the feasibility and effectiveness of the Photo-Activity versus a control activity will be explored in a randomized controlled trial with nursing home residents (N=90), and their (in)formal carers. The present study aims to develop a digital version of the Photo-Activity and to investigate its implementation and impact on nursing home residents with advanced dementia, and their (in)formal carers.įirst, within a user-participatory design, a digital-app version of the Photo-Activity will be developed and pilot-tested, in co-creation with (in)formal carers and PWD. To address the lack of social interaction and meaningful activities for persons with dementia (PWD) in nursing homes an artistic Photo-Activity was designed.
